Lora Pennington, Upper Skagit Indian Tribe
Lora learned her traditional language, Lushootseed, from her great aunt Vi taqʷšəblu Hilbert (1918 - 2008). She also became a traditional cedar bark weaver and a wool weaver. At age 23, Lora began speaking the language. She also helped teach her mother, Carmen ki?ialqs Pastores -Joe (1942 -2022).
Board member (since 2017) and volunteer (since 2003) of the Northwest Native American Basketweavers Association (NNABA). Located in Covington, Washington.
Lushootseed curriculum developer and language specialist, (since 1997).
Lora translated into Lushootseed, and during rehearsal, taught a boy actor parts of playwright Will Weigler’s script, “Common Wealth”. A play about the history of Darrington, Washington, including Sauk-Suiattle Indians. 2005.
Lushootseed Research Board of Directors (1987 to 2008), a non-profit begun by Vi Hilbert.
