This Machine is Made for Earth: The Madrona Project at MoNA

This Machine is Made for Earth: The Madrona Project at MoNA

Poets will converge at the Museum of Northwest Art in La Conner to offer a reading and discussion from the most recent issue of the anthology series, The Madrona ProjectThis Machine is Made for Earth, recently published by Empty Bowl press in Chimacum, Washington.

This final edition of the Madrona Project anthologies offers a view of tools and machines as partner, asset, enemy, threat, and persona in the lives of poets, essayists, and artists. The first section takes us from primitive tools, through the printer’s craft, to methods of farming, building, demolition, and self-expression. Another section deals with machines that move: trains, ships, the heart itself. The book contains a sampler of the work of Clemens Starck, whose life and livelihood depended on well-oiled equipment. In the final section, the machines of war employ the human body in personal as well as global histories.

This event will be MC’d by Michael Daley and will include readings from poets published in The Madrona Project: This Machine is Made for Earth including: Morgan Randall, Susan Rich, Randy Dills, Stephen Roxborough, Robert McNamara, Georgia Johnson, Steven Dolmatz, Holly Hughes, Heidi Seaborn,  Janée J. Baugher, and Leslie Wharton.

The event will conclude with a Q&A and book signing. Copies of the anthology will be available for purchase. This event is part of The Writing’s on the Wall: Poetry at MoNA, in which MoNA partners with a range of poets and organizations to bring poetry into the museum through readings, open mic events and writing workshops.

Humanities Washington Speakers Bureau: We All Transition w/ Mac Scotty McGregor

Navigating gender in our world has become more complicated. The simple binary gender system does not represent many in our communities today. In this talk, discuss the spectrum of gender in a warm and accessible way. Most of us were socialized around gender, and that socialization can limit us and affect the way we interact with others. Mac walks audiences through the types of modeling and messaging they had growing up around gender, and how we can all make conscious choices that serve us better today.

What is it like to see and walk in the world from both the male and female perspectives? Mac will share his gender journey and what it taught him about life, our culture, and how it affects our interactions with others.

Mac Scotty McGregor (he/him) is the co-founder and executive director of Positive Masculinity, a nonprofit that works to dismantle toxic masculinity cultural norms and create a healthier positive masculinity model for all people. On top of being an educator, trans activist, writer, speaker, radio host, and author of the book Positive Masculinity Now, McGregor is a former U.S. karate team member and Martial Arts Hall of Fame inductee.
