The exhibition Peter Millett: Built Forms features works fabricated from weathering steel, an alloy that forms a protective rust patina. Weathering steel has become a favorite medium for sculptors in recent years and such works by many of the most prominent sculptors of the modern area are sited in the Northwest, some in the Skagit Valley. This lecture will feature these works and where to find them, information about weathering steel properties, and how these properties can be applied to the care and conservation of weathering steel sculpture.
Patrick Gallagher is retired from a career as a materials engineer in the metals and defense industries. His education and experience have earned him the nickname “Dr. Rust”. He has provided sculptors and museums with advice on the care and conservation of weathering steel works. Patrick is a docent volunteer at MoNA and takes great delight in the art of the region.
