MoNA Luminaries Northwest Artist Awards

This year, four Luminary Awards and an Art Historian Award were named in honor of those who have left a lasting impact on our region including artists Tony Angell, Alfredo Arreguin, Fay and Robert Jones, Patti Warashina, and art historian Bill Holm. These awards were then given to artists of promise as chosen by a distinguished nominating panel and jury.

Artist nominations  were made by a panel of museum professionals including France Trépanier, Aboriginal Curator-in-Residence, Open Space Arts Society, Victoria, B.C., Brandon Reintjes, Senior Curator, Missoula Art Museum, and Rock Hushka, Chief Curator and Curator of Contemporary and Northwest Art, Tacoma Art Museum. Juror Beth Sellars, Curator, Suyama Space, Seattle, chose one artist to receive an award in each category.

The awards recipients were announced at an awards dinner at the Seattle Yacht Club on September 29, 2016.

  • The Tony Angell Award for Sculpture was given to artist trio SuttonBeresCuller: John Sutton, Ben Beres, and Zac Culler.
  • The Alfredo Arreguin Award for Mid-Career Artists was given to Saya Moriyasu.
  • The Fay and Robert Jones Award for Painting was given to Denzil Hurley.
  • The Patti Warashina Award for Emerging Artists was given to George Rodriguez.
  • The Bill Holm Award for Art History was given to Dr. Charlotte Townsend-Gault.

Each of the four winning artists receives a $1,000 honorarium and will be featured in a group exhibition at MoNA.
During the evening, a special In Memoriam tribute to arts patron Mimi Pierce included a short video of her life that was created by her nephew.
